The emergence of energy markets on the international arena is a relatively recent historical phenomenon, dating back at most 40 years if we consider the creation of the Single Buyer in the United States in 1978 as the first step towards commercialization. Since then, there has been a wave of deregulating reforms with wholesale market commercialization in the 1990s and a second wave expanding into retail commercialization in the early 2000s.
Analyzing the international scenario, the trend is towards empowering consumers and adopting competition for all consumers. In Brazil, the expansion of the Free Market (ACL) has been occurring over the past 25 years, and in January 2024, the country took a significant step by allowing all Group A consumers to choose their suppliers. Commercialization involves not only serving consumers but also meeting the needs of generators, managing portfolios, creating risk management products, and providing liquidity.
